For stealing 12 years of Social Security payments, Smyrna woman gets 18 months in prison

A Smyrna woman who fraudulently collected Social Security benefits for 12 years following the death of her mother-in-law was sentenced in federal court on Thursday. 

Deborah Vaughn's mother-in-law died in March 2006, but her death was not reported to the Social Security Administration and her monthly payments continued. The benefits were paid by direct deposit into an M&T Bank where Vaughn was a joint account holder.

By the time investigators caught on, Vaughn had stolen more than $200,000, according to court documents.
